Barack Obama Books He Wrote __EXCLUSIVE__

On Wednesday, the former U.S. president posted a list of his favorite books of 2021 on Facebook and Twitter, continuing a 2009 tradition he started while in the White House. "Art always sustains and nourishes the soul," Obama, 60, wrote in his posts. "But for me, music and storytelling felt especially urgent during this pandemic year."

This remarkable collection, which won the 1986 Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Poetry, includes most of the poems from each of Derek Walcott's seven prior books of verse and all of his long autobiographical poem, "Another Life." "Walcott's virutes as a poet are extraordinary," James Dickey wrote in The New York Times Book Review. "He could turn his attention on anything at all and make it live with a reality beyond its own; through his fearless language it becomes not only its acquired life, but the real one, the one that lasts . . . Walcott is spontaneous, headlong, and inventive beyond the limits of most other poets now writing."

Many of the 11 new books on President Obama's end-of-year list have gotten a lot of attention in 2018. Lisa Halliday's Asymmetry and Tommy Orange's There There were among the year's hot debut novels. The Largesse of the Sea Maiden was the highly anticipated new collection of short fiction from Jesus' Son author Denis Johnson, who sadly passed away in 2017 at the age of 67. Also present on the list is another short-story collection, Florida, whose author, Lauren Groff, also wrote Barack Obama's favorite book of 2015, Fates and Furies.

Obama wrote at length in his two books about his experiences growing up as the child of mixed-race parents and the issues that accompanied that status, and he noted in his first book, Dreams From My Father that before entering politics he had used marijuana and cocaine. His drug use, he wrote, was "... something that could push questions of who I was out of my mind, something that could flatten out the landscape of my heart, blur the edges of my memory" and said in a 2006 interview that his drug use was "... reflective of the struggles and confusion of a teenage boy. Teenage boys are frequently confused." 1e1e36bf2d
